Applying To College

On your cover letter include the following: 

  • Why you chose the college.
  • Why you and the college are a good match.
  • That you are looking forward to joining the college.

Application Pointers:

  • Get organized - gather personal data, standardized test scores, senior course load, and transcripts.
  • Set your priorities and do not procrastinate.
  • Complete your application.
  • Know dates of when the applications are due and apply on time.
  • Consider applying online - usually saves time.
  • Use the common and universal applications if they are accepted by the schools that you are applying to - available from your guidance counselor.
  • Do several drafts of your application - do not erase, cross out, or use white out on your final application.
  • Tailor how you present your strengths to each school that you apply to.
  • Be honest - don’t exaggerate academics or extracurricular activities.
  • Be sure all information is accurate.
  • Get a copy of your transcripts and review them carefully for accuracy - be sure your SAT and ACT scores are listed.
  • Make sure all corrections are made by your guidance counselor by October 1st of your senior year.
  • Read applications carefully.
  • List activities (extracurricular, academic, and work) in the best manner to approach the college - you may also attach an addendum resume.
  • Gather recommendation letters - one should be from your guidance counselor - parents, teachers, and peers can also write recommendation letters - the student can write an autobiography that includes education, personality, and activities When writing the essay portion for the application, be sure to utilize the multiple books that teach how to write a college application essay.
